The dragon fruit, Hylocereus sp. is a cactus vine of the family Cactaceae. It is a tropical fruit that is widely cultivated in Vietnam and it is a popular fruit in Southeast Asia. Dragon fruit originated in Central and South America. Although native to Central Americas, the crop has been successfully grown all over the world especially in the tropical countries. The crop is commercially grown in Israel, Australia, U.S.A, Mexico, India, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa and recently starting to be cultivated in Kenya. Globally three major types of dragon fruit are commonly grown based on their colour. These include; • Red colour fruit with white colour flesh. (Hylocereus undatus) • Red colour fruit with red colour flesh (Hylocereus polyrhisus). • Yellow colour fruit with white flesh (Hylocereus megelanthus). Usually, dragon fruit flowers are white or pink, are showy and large sized, bell-shaped and tubular. The plant flowers bloom only at night and these flowers have an excellent fragrant smell that is attractive to bees. The bees are active dragon fruit pollinators
